Since today is February 27, 2026, you’re actually at a critical crossroads. The portal for the next batch opens in just 48 hours. Here’s the lowdown on how to navigate this without the corporate fluff.

The “1-to-10” Rule: Mark Your Calendar

NITI Aayog doesn’t do “Summer” or “Winter” breaks in the traditional sense. They keep a tight, rolling monthly window:

  • When to apply: From the 1st to the 10th of every month.

  • The Next Batch: The portal opens this Sunday, March 1, 2026.

  • The “2-Month” Buffer: You have to apply at least two months before you want to start.

    • Example: To snag a summer spot in May 2026, you must apply between March 1 and March 10. If you wait until April, you’re looking at a July start date.

The Eligibility Filter (No Exceptions!)

NITI is strictly academic, and their system is programmed to auto-reject if you don’t hit these specific numbers. It’s tough, but it’s the standard:

Your Current Status What They Look At The Cut-off
Undergrad (UG) Must have finished 2nd Year 85% in Class 12 Boards
Postgrad (PG) Must have finished 1st Year 70% in Graduation
Research/PhD Currently Pursuing 70% in Graduation

Recently Graduated? If you finished your degree within the last six months (say, Dec 2025), you can still apply as long as you have that 70% cumulative score.

Logistics: The “Reality Check”

Before you pack your bags for Delhi, here is the honest truth about the perks (or lack thereof):

  • Stipend: ₹0. This is an unpaid internship.

  • Duration: Minimum 6 weeks, maximum 6 months.

  • Hardware: You must bring your own laptop.

  • Location: It’s strictly offline at NITI Bhawan, Sansad Marg, New Delhi. You’ll need to figure out your own PG or hostel in the city.

  • Attendance: You need 75% attendance to get that certificate. If you skip too many days, you walk away with nothing.

Cracking the SOP (Statement of Purpose)

Thousands of students with 90%+ scores apply every month. Your SOP is the only place you can actually stand out.

  • Avoid the cliché: Don’t talk about “wanting to change India.” Everyone says that.

  • Be a specialist: Pick a specific Vertical (like Public Finances, Industry, or Data Analytics). Mention a recent NITI report—like the SDG India Index or the Trade Watch Quarterly—and explain how your skills can help analyze that specific data.
